How zodiac compatibility works
Zodiac compatibility compares 2 signs to describe how 2 people might interact. It focuses on temperament, communication style and what each partner naturally brings to a relationship. It does not promise an outcome or predict events.
In astrological tradition, the 12 signs are grouped by element and by their position on the zodiac wheel. These patterns are used to describe what tends to feel easy between 2 signs and what may take more effort. The same traits that attract a couple can also create friction.
Sun signs describe style: how a pair makes plans, handles conflict or relaxes together. Any of the 78 sign pairs can build something strong with awareness and goodwill, and any pair can feel tense if the partners clash over values or expectations.
Elements and distance on the wheel
Each sign belongs to one of 4 elements. Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
On the zodiac wheel, the distance between 2 signs is described in degrees: same sign (0°), neighbouring signs (30°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°), quincunx (150°) and opposite signs (180°). These angles are used as a shorthand for compatibility style.
In astrological tradition, trines (signs in the same element) and supporting elements (fire with air, earth with water) are described as the easiest pairings. Squares and quincunxes are seen as the most demanding. This points to how smoothly partners might understand each other, not to whether the relationship will succeed.
Same sign, opposite signs and neighbours
There are 78 possible sign pairs: 66 pairs of 2 different signs and 12 pairs of the same sign. A same-sign pair shares strengths, blind spots and pacing. The couple might feel instantly understood, but may also find that no one naturally balances certain habits.
Opposite signs, 180° apart, often bring complementary traits. One partner may be more direct while the other is more reflective. This pairing can offer perspective and attraction, but also frequent disagreements if each side insists on seeing things only from one angle.
Neighbouring signs, 30° apart, usually do not share an element. They can feel curious about each other yet slightly out of step. These couples often need extra patience to understand why the other reacts differently when making plans, handling conflict or setting priorities.
Beyond sun signs: compatibility by birth date
Sun sign comparisons focus on 1 piece of the picture: overall temperament and style. In astrological tradition, a fuller view of compatibility uses both partners’ complete birth dates and looks at a wider set of patterns between them.
This page also offers a calculator where 2 people enter their birth dates and receive their shared Partnership Matrix, a combined Destiny Matrix based on both dates. It describes main energies and chapters in the connection, going beyond what sun signs alone can show.
The Partnership Matrix calculator does not replace individual effort, but it can help 2 partners name recurring themes in their relationship and see where they naturally support or challenge each other.
