What a Moon sign means
In astrology the Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment of birth. Astrologers use it to describe emotions, instinctive reactions, what feels comforting and the deep need to feel safe.
The Sun sign is the conscious self and the will, but the Moon sign shows the inner weather. It colors how someone reacts on a hard day, what relaxes them in the evening and what kind of closeness feels natural.
The Moon is traditionally linked with mood, memory and habit. Some astrologers connect it with the tarot card II The High Priestess, as a symbol of intuition and inner knowing.
The traditional dignities of the Moon say that it is strong in Cancer (its own sign) and Taurus (exaltation), and more challenged in Capricorn (detriment) and Scorpio (fall). In the other signs it is considered neutral. These dignities describe style, not good or bad people.
How to find a Moon sign by birth date
The calculator on this page uses the tropical zodiac of Western astrology and precise astronomical data. It needs the birth date, and can also take the birth time and place. The place is used only to find the correct time zone for that date.
The Moon moves through all 12 signs in about 27.3 days and stays in one sign for about 2 to 2.5 days. Because of this, on many birth dates the Moon stays in the same sign for the whole calendar day in that time zone, so the date alone is enough.
On other dates the Moon changes sign during the day. Then the exact birth time and the local time zone decide the Moon sign. Around those dates someone born early in the day can have a different Moon sign from someone born late in the day in the same place.
If the time of birth is not entered, the calculator checks whether the Moon stayed in one sign that whole day where the person was born. If it did, it gives that sign. If the Moon changed sign, it shows both signs and the time of the change so it is clear which one fits a known or approximate birth time.
The result on the page also shows the Sun sign and the Moon phase at birth. The phase is 1 of 8: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter or Waning Crescent.
Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign
Astrologers work with 3 main factors: the Sun sign, the Moon sign and the rising sign (ascendant). Together they describe how someone sees themself, feels inside and comes across at first sight.
The Sun sign shows the conscious self, will and long-term direction. The Moon sign shows emotional needs, instinctive reactions and the way someone seeks comfort and safety. The rising sign describes the first impression, body language and the way of meeting the world.
For reading temperament, many people start with the Sun and Moon signs, then add the rising sign. The rising sign calculator on DateMyst can be used together with this Moon sign calculator for a fuller picture.
Western and Vedic Moon signs
The calculator on this page uses the tropical zodiac of Western astrology. It is the zodiac used in most Western Sun sign and Moon sign descriptions.
Vedic (Indian) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. Today the sidereal zodiac is about 24 degrees behind the tropical one. Because each sign spans 30 degrees, the Vedic Moon sign (rashi) is often one sign earlier than the Western Moon sign.
This is why someone can have, for example, a Cancer Moon in Western astrology and a Gemini Moon as their rashi in Vedic astrology, while both systems are using the same birth data.
The Moon sign and the Destiny Matrix
The Moon sign calculator and the Destiny Matrix on this page are two separate methods. The Moon sign is based on the position of the Moon in the tropical zodiac at a given time and place.
The Destiny Matrix uses only the full birth date. It is based on numerology and 22 tarot arcana and is meant to describe themes such as talents, relationships, money and life purpose in that system.
Someone can explore both without having to choose between them. The Destiny Matrix does not change the Moon sign, and the Moon sign does not change the numbers in the matrix; they offer different languages for thinking about temperament and direction.
